Halsketten Länge Guide 2026 — von Choker bis Sautoir, NemoMatheo Berlin

Five standard lengths — from 38 cm choker to 95 cm sautoir. Each sits differently, each tells a different story.

Most customers do not ask me "Which necklace is pretty?", but rather "Which length suits me?" This guide answers precisely that — with cm standards, neckline matrix, and eight concrete examples from our studio. So you don't have to guess on your next purchase.

Quick Facts

  • 5 Standard Lengths: Choker (35–40 cm), Princess (43–48 cm), Matinée (50–60 cm), Opera (70–90 cm), Sautoir (90 cm+).
  • Measuring at Home: Place string around the neck, mark the desired end position, measure with a ruler.
  • Neckline First: The chain length should never end longer or shorter than the neckline — but deliberately above or below it.
  • Layering Rule of Thumb: At least 5 cm distance between each necklace, otherwise everything gets tangled.
  • Occasion Tip: For business ≤ 50 cm, for cocktail 55–70 cm, for evening from 80 cm.

Necklace Length — the 5 Classics at a Glance

Anyone at home in the jewelry world knows them. Anyone new often feels overwhelmed by terms like "Matinée" or "Sautoir". Yet the system is surprisingly clear — it originates from the late 19 century, when length-accurate pearl necklaces became a status symbol of European salons, and remains standard in jeweler books and online shops worldwide today. The terms originally come from French and describe the time of day or occasion for which the respective length was traditionally worn — matinée for the morning, opera for the evening in the box.

Choker (35–40 cm): Sits snugly at the base of the neck. Fashionable, youthful, and depending on the material either edgy (leather, velvet) or elegant (pearls, fine gold chain). Works best with high necklines or off-the-shoulder styles.

Princess (43–48 cm): The standard length par excellence. Ends just below the collarbone. Universally wearable, suitable for everyday life, and appropriate for almost any neckline. 90 % of all necklaces sold in Germany fall into this measurement.

Matinée (50–60 cm): Ends at the upper chest area. More elegant and slightly more formal. Ideal for business looks or as a standalone statement necklace without a pendant.

Opera (70–90 cm): Reaches to the middle of the chest. Traditional for evening wear — but when worn doubled, it can become a dramatic choker-matinée combination.

Sautoir (90 cm+): The long, hanging chain. Ending low on the sternum, often with a tassel or pendant. 2026 a definite comeback piece. More on this further down in our sautoir section.

If you would like to get oriented regarding materials, you will find in our Natural Stone Jewelry Main Collection Pieces in all five lengths — from choker to sautoir.

How do I measure my ideal necklace length at home?

You don't need a measuring tape from the jewelry studio. A simple cord or string is enough.

Step 1: Stand in front of a mirror. Wear the blouse or shirt with which you want to combine the necklace most often. The neckline also helps determine the fit.

Step 2: Place the string around your neck and close it loosely behind your nape. Let it fall forward.

Step 3: Slide the lower point of the string to the spot where the necklace should end — just below the collarbone for princess, at the décolletage for matinée, at the sternum for opera.

Step 4: Tie a knot in the string at the fastening point in the back. Take it off and measure it with a ruler. This is your ideal length — plus 1–2 cm of leeway for movement when wearing, because necklaces visually shorten by about this amount when put on due to the curve of the neck.

Pro tip: Do this once for three different tops (V-neck, crew neck, high collar). You will see — every neckline calls for a different necklace length. Note down the three numbers and keep the slip of paper in your jewelry box. The next time you shop online, you will immediately know which cm specification "fits" you and which doesn't. In the medium to long term, these three numbers will save you dozens of mispurchases and unnecessary returns.

Which length fits which neckline?

The most important rule: A necklace should never end right at the neckline. Either clearly above it — or consciously below it. Otherwise, an optical break is created.

V-neck: A necklace that follows the V-line and ends about 2–3 cm above its tip looks most harmonious. Princess (45 cm) or light matinée (50–55 cm) are ideal. Y-necklaces and short pendants also work wonderfully here.

Crewneck: Chokers or princess lengths sit perfectly — the necklace lies above the fabric edge. Long necklaces, on the other hand, disappear under the fabric and look buried.

Boatneck: A boatneck is wide and horizontal. A short necklace (choker, 38–40 cm) follows the line elegantly. A sautoir breaks this horizontality and looks restless.

Off-shoulder: Chokers shine here — the bare neck needs an accent. Statement necklaces with a dramatic pendant also work, provided they are not too long.

Polo & turtleneck: Here, long lengths triumph. Matinée (55 cm), opera, or sautoir over a turtleneck sweater looks timelessly chic — like something out of a 70es French film.

Tunic & button-down blouse: Medium to long necklaces pull the line downwards and elongate the silhouette. Matinée starting from 55 cm upwards is ideal here. When the top buttons are open, a V-like effect is created, which is framed particularly elegantly with a Y-shaped necklace or a sautoir with a central pendant.

Off-the-shoulder & cowl neck: These romantic, often draped necklines call for delicate, medium-length necklaces. A princess with a small stone pendant works better here than any statement piece that would get lost in the folds.

Length Recommendation by Body Shape & Stature

In advance: Jewelry has no rules that you aren't allowed to break. But anyone looking for a visually balanced overall appearance can use these as a rough guide.

Petite stature (under 1,65 m): Shorter necklaces (choker, princess) look proportional. Very long sautoirs can visually shorten the silhouette because they go past the waist. Tip: Wear the sautoir doubled.

Average stature (1,65–1,75 m): Virtually everything works here. Play with all five lengths depending on the occasion.

Tall stature (over 1,75 m): Matinée, opera, and sautoir look particularly elegant on you because they emphasize the natural line. A short choker can look lost — unless you make it a conscious stylistic break.

Narrow neck: Chokers emphasize it, sometimes too much. A princess with a small pendant gently distracts from this.

Wider neck or oval face: Longer necklaces (matinée+) stretch vertically. V-shaped pendants enhance the effect.

Important: These tips are inspiration, not a rulebook. Wear what makes you feel good — that beats every rule. We have female customers who, at 1,58 m, consciously love opera chains because they create an unusual, almost theatrical line with them. If that is your style: pull it off. Sense of style always beats textbooks.

Our 8 Necklaces Sorted by Length

Golden Luck Naturstein-Kette mit Sonnenanhänger — Matinée-Länge für V-Ausschnitt, NemoMatheo Berlin

Theory is nice. What really helps: concrete examples. Here are eight models from our studio, sorted from short to long. So that you can immediately see what a specific cm figure means in reality.

1. XL02 Adorable Engraving Pendant — Princess 45 cm

The most everyday-friendly length in our assortment. Ends just below the collarbone. The small engraving pendant looks harmonious on any neckline shape. A perfect entry point if you don't know yet which length suits you — princess is always a safe choice. Ideal for crewneck t-shirts, shirts, light V-necks.

2. XL21 Midnight Pearl Obsidian Necklace — Princess 45 cm

Also princess, but with a statement factor. Black obsidian meets a single freshwater pearl. Wears elegantly with a blouse, cocktail dress, or simple sweater. If you like the classic look, combine it with a fine gold chain in 40 cm worn above it. More examples for obsidian can be found in the Gemstone Jewelry Collection.

3. XL04 Lightbearer — Matinée 55 cm

Ends at the upper chest area. Turns any V-neck into a stage. This length is ideal if you value elegance without exaggeration. Wears solo or in layering with a shorter princess (45 cm) above it — keyword 5-cm rule.

4. XL18 Ocean Night Statement Necklace Sodalite — Matinée 55 cm

The second matinée of the bunch — this time with deep blue sodalite. Anyone who wants to wear a single necklace as the main accent will find the right cut here. Works particularly well on simple, solid-colored tops. Avoid layering — this necklace is a soloist, not a band member.

5. XL06 Double Shell No.01 — Layering 2er Set

A pre-combined set of two lengths: 40 cm + 48 cm. This takes the search for matching individual pieces off your hands. The shells lie slightly offset on the décolletage. Perfect for summer, light blouses, off-shoulder tops. If you have never layered before, start with a set like this.

6. XL07 Tiger's Eye Protective Stone Set 18K — Layering 2er Set

Two lengths, 42 cm and 50 cm. The tiger's eye is traditionally worn as a protective stone — if you are interested in its meaning, you will find it in the article Tiger's Eye Necklace Models Protection Grounding Comparison 2026 a detailed overview. The 18-K gold plating gives the stone a warm setting.

7. XL22A Balloon Dog Layering Necklace — Layering 18K

A playful layering necklace with a pop art pendant. The 18-K genuine gold plating ensures color fidelity even after months. Medium length (approx. 48 cm), ideal as the top layer over a matinée or between two shorter gold chains.

8. XL17 Mystic Leaf Layering Set — Layering Vintage

Three lengths in one set: 40 cm, 48 cm, 55 cm. This is the perfect application of the "rule of 3 lengths" which we explain in the next section. Vintage look with leaf motif and subtle patina. For everyone who does not want to put together layering pieces themselves.

You can find more natural stone models in our Natural Stone Jewelry Main Collection, in case you are still looking for the matching stone energy.

Layering necklaces — the rule of 3 lengths

Layering-Ketten-Konzept — Regel der 3 Längen kurz-mittel-lang, NemoMatheo Berlin

Layering is 2026 no longer just a trend, but an established style. But it only works if the lengths are right. The rule of thumb: Three necklaces in three clearly defined lengths.

Necklace 1 — Short (38–42 cm): Sits at the base of the neck. Narrow, fine, often without a pendant or with a mini pendant.

Necklace 2 — Medium (45–50 cm): Princess area. This is where the main pendant can sit.

Necklace 3 — Long (55–65 cm): Matinée. Anchor-like, possibly with a larger stone or geometric element.

Important: At least 5 cm of visible space between each necklace. Otherwise the links will tangle and it will look cluttered instead of composed.

Material mix? Yes, but controlled. Either one material family (all gold, all silver), or consciously a stone highlight between two metal chains. If you want to wear gold and silver at the same time, make sure the distribution looks asymmetrical — so not a gold chain between two silver chains in the middle, but gold at the top or bottom as an accent. Symmetry often looks stiff in layering, whereas slight asymmetry is vibrant and style-conscious. Our spoke article dives deeper into the topic Layering necklaces — how to combine jewelry correctly with concrete 3 and 4 combinations from our assortment.

If you want to experiment with pearls: A delicate freshwater pearl necklace as the middle layer worked best in our tests. You can find models for this in the comparison Freshwater Pearl Necklace Models Comparison 2026.

Sautoir trend 2026 — how to wear without looking theatrical?

The sautoir necklace — 90 cm or longer, often with a tassel or heavy pendant at the end — is celebrating 2026 a clear comeback. Inspired by Coco Chanel of the 1920s, reinterpreted with modern stones.

Three ways to wear it for everyday life:

1. Over turtlenecks. Classic. Works with any simple sweater.

2. Double knotted. This turns 95 cm into a choker-princess combo. Fashionable, without extra effort.

3. Solo on shirt blouses. Leave the top button open — the sautoir disappears halfway into it, halfway in front of it. French chic.

You should avoid sautoirs with very tight tops with a lot of bust area — then the necklace hangs restlessly. And not with strapless summer tops if there is no optical line for the necklace to orient itself by. Here too, helps our layering guide with alternative combinations.

Material choice for sautoirs is crucial: Long necklaces have a stronger effect due to the additional weight at the end than shorter models. A sautoir with a large stone or tassel should therefore consist of stable components — fine 925 silver chain with gemstone pendant works just as well as 18-K gold-plated link chains. Avoid wafer-thin chains with a heavy pendant because they will wear out over time.

FAQ

What necklace length is standard for women?

The princess length with 43–48 cm is the worldwide standard. About 90% of all necklaces sold in Germany fall into this measurement. It ends just below the collarbone and fits almost any neckline.

How long is a choker?

A classic choker measures between 35 and 40 cm. It sits tightly at the base of the neck without cutting in. Anyone with a narrow neck prefers 35–37 cm; with a stronger neck circumference, 38–40 cm are more comfortable.

Which necklace length fits a V-neck?

Princess (43–48 cm) or light matinée (50–55 cm). The necklace should end about 2–3 cm above the tip of the V. Y-necklaces and pendant models work particularly well because they optically follow the V-line.

Can I have necklace lengths shortened?

With most link chains, yes — a jeweler can remove links and reattach the clasp. With pearl necklaces or threaded models, this is more complex because they have to be re-knotted. Ask us directly if needed, many of our models offer an adjustment service.

What length to combine for layering?

The rule of 3 lengths: short (38–42 cm), medium (45–50 cm), long (55–65 cm). At least 5 cm space between each necklace. If you want it easy, grab a pre-combined set like our XL17 Mystic Leaf Layering Set with three coordinated lengths.
